rat buddy

Day 353 of 365 in the “Marathon of the Dope” . . .

.....................................................................................................

That’s what I call him, even though his name is Fluffy.

As you may, or may not, be able to tell he is our pet rat - the last of four rats we’ve had and he is having the good fortune of being the longest living as well at the current doddering old age of 1 year 8 months.

As you can see, pet rats (lab rats) are not the gross brown Norwegine horrors rumaging through your garbage and growing bigger than cats. They are cute, hairy little guys that do not bite and make great pets.

Domestic rats have been bred for the laboratory (for over 100 years now), so we homo sapiens can perform horrible experiments on them in the hopes of extending our own lives. We do these kinds of thing, in case you didn’t know.

Anyhow, these little hair balls live about 2 to 3 years, which is not a long time.

But time enough to get attached to them and find them to be an integral part of the family.

We have a nice rat home too. It’s a three story rat high rise rat unit, suitable for two rats.

Rats love living in cardboard boxes because they can chew them to shreds. Rats love to chew things - and you thought puppies were bad.

He is to be our last rat buddy. Our next pet, if we can ever afford one, will be a dog.

Either a whippet or a border terrier.

Until tomorrow . . .

So you don't think you'd be violently allergic to the dog?

  2. Whippets and Border Terriers are particularily non-allergenic breeds.

    Looked it up. :)

And G&D have a very nice Whippet so it proves that they are well trainable. But I would go to the effort to train it as much as they've trained Gil. Otherwise if it decides to run, forget it...
